I’ve got a new site and it’s been a fun experience developing it.
My old site ran on squarespace and it was great but provided a few roadblocks when I wanted to use custom layouts for certain pages in the site. I really liked the slideshow feature in the “Momentum” template I was using so I recreated it for my new site. If you are looking for a site and are happy with an out of the box template that needs little customization, squarespace is great.
Let me tell you about my new site:
Galleria jquery plugin for photography portfolio
Adaptive images for serving up responsive images
SASS for CSS preprocessing
I don’t write a lot of reviews but I do use affiliate links where possible.
Siteleaf has a great simple interface, making it easy to navigate and get around and I will hopefully update my site a little more frequently because of this.
Siteleaf templates are built on the liquid programming language and it really was a fun language to learn. In Siteleaf you can use metadata at the site, page, post or even asset level and I used this heavily throughout my site. I wanted the ability to have different post types for my journal(blog) and metadata allows me to achieve this. My journal uses a grid for the index and I can define different “types” that will define how this posts are displayed in the grid and within my admin panel in Siteleaf I define a ‘type’.
The slideshow feature for my photography portfolio uses a similar feature and it took me a while to figure it out and get my had wrapped around it but I figured it out by defining a list of assets with metadata.
I would like to eventually add a shop and now that I have a grasp of liquid it shouldn’t be to difficult as it is the language that run’s shopify’s templates. A nice extra skill I have picked up developing this site. I will be adding a lazy-load feature for my journal once I get a grasp of how to implement it.
I will hopefully stop fussing over how the site is built or looks and focus more energy on creative personal projects through photography, design or … .
